Expertise: Transitioning to Math Common Core K-8 * Math Differentiation * Guided Math Implementation * Gifted Education Differentiation and Social Emotional Needs * Facilitating Trainings

A decade ago, Cheryl started her career teaching students as a 6th/7thgrade math and advanced math teacher in a suburban junior high school. As she instinctively differentiated the instruction in her classroom, other teachers began asking her about her methods and successfully began implementing them. Later, she became a K-8 gifted math differentiation specialist and worked with administrators, assistant superintendents, superintendents and curriculum directors.

Her love of teaching teachers has continued to expand as evidenced by the work she has done for the Illinois State Board of Education’s Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) Committee. She has also trained teachers and administrators state wide on gifted education, Response to Intervention (RtI), Common Core, and math. Certified as an online instructor through St. Francis University and EdTech Leaders Online (ETLO), she has presented online professional development trainings that are engaging, rigorous, and effective. Cheryl was nominated to participate on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Educator Review group for Mathematics and to represent Illinois in PARCC for development of the PARCC Mathematics Assessment.

Cheryl brings teacher-tested, best practice strategies to educators in her training and consulting. She incorporates differentiation and technology while introducing cutting edge and innovative strategies for math teachers. She regularly presents workshops and at statewide conferences in Illinois, including the Raising Student Achievement Conference (RSAC) and the Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC).

She has a B.A. from Illinois State University, a Masters degree in Teaching and Leadership from St. Xavier University, and a Gifted Verified certificate from Aurora University.

Contact Cheryl regarding the following math workshops which are fully customizable to suit your school and district's needs:

  • Common Core Math Makeover: Instructional Practices and Content Changes K-8
    • This workshop is for teachers who are looking for way to implement Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In this workshop, participants will investigate how to incorporate the 8 Mathematical Practices into their math class. Explore specific content changes and application of skills in real-world situations.
  • Mathematic Common Core State Trainer K-12
    • The Illinois State Board of Education has designed this training to help school districts transition to the Common Core State Standards for mathematics (CCSSM). There are six, 1-2 hour sessions including:
      • Introduction to the CCSSM and PARCC
      • Exploring the Standards of Mathematical Practice
      • Exploring the Standards of Mathematical Content
      • Change Instruction
      • Looking Deeper in the CCSSM through Progressions Documents
      • Transition to the CCSS in Mathematics Four different grade band sessions
  • Math and Technology Integration with Common core Math Standard Examples
    • Learn how to use technology as a tool to develop reasoning and problem-solving skills required to meet the demands of the new Common Core State Standards for mathematics (CCSSM). Many real-world projects and problems will be explored using math apps and web resources.
  • Math Differentiation Made Manageable K-8Guided Math-Next StepsGifted Programming Consulting
    • In this workshop, participants will learn about management and instructional strategies that will help them meet the needs of their students. Guided math or small group math with learning centers will be explored.
    • During this workshop, we will investigate management strategies of how to utilize time with the teacher while other students are working on learning centers and/or independent projects.
    • We will also investigate how to meet the needs of varying levels of ability.
  • Differentiation for High Achieving Math Students
  • Differentiation for Paraprofessionals K-12
